This firefighter paper plate craft is perfect for Fire Safety Week or anytime you want to teach kids about the important roles of our everyday heroes! It’s an engaging hands-on activity that combines painting, cutting, and gluing while giving kids the chance to create their own unique fire fighter. Whether you use it as a classroom project or a rainy-day craft at home, kids will love designing the helmet, face, and details, and you’ll love how it sneaks in fine motor skill practice along the way.

Materials
- Paper plates
- Printable template pieces
- yellow, red, beige, pink and black colored paper
- Paint: red, beige, black paint
- Paint brushes
- Scissors
- Glue or double sided tape
- Black marker
Instructions
Step 1)
Print the template and gather your supplies.

Step 2)
Paint three paper plates, one red, one black and one beige. Set them aside to dry completely. If you want to skip this step, you can purchase colored paper plates from a party supply store or dollar store.

Step 3)
Cut a shape out of the black paper plate that looks like hair. Kids can get creative with this step and choose what kind of hair-style to use for their fire fighter. Glue the black hair onto top of the beige paper plate.

Step 4)
Cut the red paper plate in half. Glue one half of the red paper plate on top of the hair.

Step 5)
Fold the second piece of the red paper plate in half and cut out a semi-circle from it. You may want to refer to the video instructions for this step. The shape you end up with is a long oval, cut it in half then attach it behind the beige plate with glue to help form the helmet brim. Use the rest of the red paper plate scrap as the helmet brim and glue it to the front of the helmet.

Step 6)
Cut out the template pieces and trace them onto colored paper. Use yellow, red, beige, pink and black colored paper. You can always draw the face of the fire fighter onto the paper plate to skip some of the cutting and gluing. Or keep it for extra fine motor skills practice.

Step 7)
Glue the yellow and red badge shapes to the top of the fire helmet, add the beige ears to the side brim of the helmet.

Step 8)
Glue the final facial features to the paper plate and use a marker to draw on any final touches needed, like pupils.

Tips & Troubleshooting
Let The Paint Dry Completely
It might be tempting to rush ahead, but waiting for the paint to dry before gluing on the template pieces helps everything stick better for this simple activity.
Pre-Cut Pieces For Younger Kids
If you’re crafting with toddlers or preschoolers, you might want to cut out the template pieces ahead of time.
Try Markers Or Crayons Instead Of Paint
No paint? No problem! Have kids color their plates with markers or crayons for a quick, low-mess version.
Use Glue Sticks For Faster Dry Time
White glue works great, but a glue stick will dry faster and can make it easier for kids to keep crafting without long waits.
Personalize The Fire Fighter
Encourage kids to change the hairstyle, facial expression, or helmet design so each firefighter looks different.
Add A Name Tag
Cut a small rectangle from paper, write a name on it, and glue it to the helmet or shirt area — it’s a fun way for kids to “name” their hero.

Benefits of This Kite Craft For Kids
Fine Motor Skills
Cutting out template pieces, painting, and gluing all help strengthen the small muscles in kids’ hands and fingers while they have a great time. These skills are important for handwriting, buttoning clothes, and other everyday tasks.
Creative Expression
Kids can choose hair styles, facial expressions, and helmet designs to make their firefighter unique. This freedom to design encourages imagination and gives them a sense of ownership over their project.
Learning About Fire Safety
Craft time is the perfect chance to talk about fire safety rules, what firefighters do, and why their gear is important. Pairing the craft with a short safety discussion can help kids remember key lessons like “stop, drop, and roll” or how to call 911.
Following Directions
Since the craft involves a sequence of steps, it gives kids practice in listening carefully and following instructions — a skill that’s useful both in school and in safety situations.
Social Skills
If kids are making the craft together in a group, they can practice sharing supplies, helping each other, and talking about their creations, which encourages teamwork and communication.
Why This Craft Is Perfect for Fire Safety Week
Fire Safety Week or Fire Prevention Month is an ideal time to introduce young children to important safety concepts in a way that feels fun and approachable. Crafts like this firefighter paper plate project help children make a personal connection to the topic by creating their own “hero” while you share age-appropriate tips. For preschoolers and early elementary students, hands-on activities are one of the best ways to keep their attention and help them remember what they’ve learned during fire prevention week.
During craft time, you can talk about things like recognizing a smoke detector sound, what a fire extinguisher is, the importance of staying low in smoke, or how to call 911 in an emergency. Kids are more likely to remember these lessons when they’re paired with a creative project, making this craft a perfect addition to Fire Safety Week in classrooms, daycare centers, or at home.
Final Thoughts
This firefighter paper plate craft isn’t just fun, it’s a hands-on way to get kids talking, thinking, and learning about fire safety. Whether you use it at home, in the classroom as part of a community helpers unit, or as part of a Fire Safety Week activity, it’s a simple project that sparks creativity, builds important skills, and helps kids understand the vital role firefighters play in keeping us safe.
